The International Centre for Medical Research in Franceville (CIRMF) is a Gabonese Institute for research, training and support to healthcare systems. Although the initial research of the CIRMF was focused on parasitic diseases and human fertility, the research topics rapidly expanded to include other major health issues for Central Africa. Today, the Centre's activities are diversified and cover research in basic virology and epidemiology, parasitology, primatology, genetics, haematology and health ecology. Excellence is taught by encouraging the participation of young researchers, students, PhD students and post-docs from Gabon and around the world. The CIRMF researchers also teach in university settings. The CIRMF fulfils a fundamental mission to support public health at the national and international levels by sharing its expertise, from laboratory diagnostics to support for epidemic response interventions. The CIRMF celebrated its 30th anniversary on Feb. 5, 2009.
