Project Ecosol

The ECOSOL project (Ecology of Cercopithecus solatus), initiated in early 2009 at the CIRMF, is a global project on the sun-tailed monkey, which aims first to develop the fundamental knowledge of its biology, ecology, genetics and diseases, and secondly to make use of the knowledge acquired to support conservation efforts.

The sun-tailed monkey, endemic to Gabon, was not discovered until 1984. Very little is known about this rare animal, which is discreet and difficult to observe in the wild. Deforestation, which reduces the amount of suitable habitat available, and bushmeat hunting are its two main threats. Sun-tailed monkeys are currently listed as vulnerable species on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List of Threatened Species 2010, and in Appendix 2 of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). The only semi-captive group of sun-tailed monkeys in the world is housed at the CIRMF in Gabon. Known internationally, this research centre has become a major player in the conservation of Gabonese natural heritage and is committed to promoting the acquisition of valuable knowledge about this rare and little known species.
