Retrovirology Unit

OBJECTIVES

Research activities in Simian Retrovirology

  • Molecular characterization, diversity and prevalence of lentivirus (SIV, STLV, foamy virus) in primates (gorillas, chimpanzees, guenons) and consequences on the origin of human viruses (HIV, HTLV).
  • Study of interspecies transmission and the risk of emergence in humans of novel HIV, HTLV viruses.
  • Pathophysiology of SIV lentiviral infection (study on mandrills, macaques and vervets).

Public Health support for HIV / AIDS :

  • Evaluation of serological screening strategies.
  • Early paediatric diagnosis in newborns of HIV positive mothers in PMTCT programs.
  • Measurement of HIV-1 RNA viral load in patients treated with antiretrovirals and tracked in healthcare facilities.
  • Study of the genetic diversity of HIV strains (groups M, N, O and P) circulating in Gabon.
  • Introduction of antiretroviral resistance testing in patients with virologic failure.

Other Activities :

  • Training national researchers;
  • Writing articles for international publication of the results obtained by the team;
  • National and international collaborations with other teams specialized in retrovirology.
